Catalonia, an open and dynamic economy

Catalonia is a country of Mediterranean Europe, with a GDP of over 200 billion euros and a GDP per capita of more than 28 thousand euros. With an area of 32.106,5 km2, it has a population of 7.5 million inhabitants.

The industrial sector represents 20.2% of GVA. There are some industries that highlight:

The branches that have gained more weight in the industrial structure during the last 15 years are: energy, sanitation and waste management, power, chemical industries and pharmaceuticals.

Regarding the agricultural sector it represents 0.9% of total GVA in Catalonia and 3.6% of GVA including the food industry. Final agricultural production stands at around 4,300 million euros, 65.12% corresponding to livestock and 32.07% to agriculture.

The external sector is one of the strong points of the Catalan economy. Catalonia has a high degree of trade openness (a 116.9% of GDP) in line with other small and open economies in Europe.

Catalonia, a large meat exporter

The meat industry is the main food industry in Catalonia, with a turnover of almost 8,000 million euros. The Catalan meat sector represents over 32% of turnover in the food industry, 40% in employment and over 21% in number of companies.

This sector is increasingly geared towards vertical integration in order to ensure traceability from the farm to the retail outlet, complying with the growing demands of the market.

Catalonia has produced more than two million tons of meat, considering all species (porcine, bovine, ovine, equine, goats, poultry and rabbits).It also stands for positioning in international markets poultry hatching eggs.

Catalonia is also a major meat exporter. Almost 36% of the produced meat is sold in foreign markets, which represents, in value, more than 2.400 million euros and a coverage rate of over 600%.

At the same time, Catalonia is a country with a strong tradition in the production of hand-made stuffed meats, of high quality and great variety.

Porcine

  • Porcine is an essential segment of the final Catalan agricultural production (PFA). It is the first sector in volume, with 33% of PFA
  • Catalonia is the second European region in porcine heads and pork meat production, only behind Denmark
  • In Catalonia 19 million animals are annually slaughtered and 1.55 million tons of pork are produced
  • 64% of the meat produced is exported

Bovine

  • The bovine sector represents 10% of the Final Livestock production and 6% of final agricultural production
  • It is the third largest livestock production in Catalonia, behind porcine and poultry
  • 116 thousand tons of beef are produced annually

Ovine

  • The ovine sector represents 1% of the final agricultural production
  • The Catalan ovine sector is specialized in fattening
  • Each year, nearly 1.3 million animals are slaughtered and carcasses with an average weight of 13kg / carcass are obtained

Poultry

  • The poultry sector is the second agricultural sector in Catalonia, after the porcine and it represents around 15% of the final agricultural production (11% animals and 4% eggs)
  • The production model is integration, which represents around 95% of the whole sector
  • Catalonia slaughters annually more than 200 million birds which produce more than 351 thousand tons of meat a year
  • The main production corresponds to chickens, turkeys and quails also stand

Rabbit

  • The production and consumption of rabbit meat is deeply rooted in Catalonia and other regions of the Mediterranean
  • Catalonia has about a thousand fattening rabbit farms with twenty slaughterhouses, which represents 40% of farms in Spain and 28% of sacrifice
  • With a production of 18,021 tons of rabbit meat and 15.5 million head slaughtered,Catalonia is the first Autonomous Community producing rabbit meat of farm
  • The rabbit meat is known for its nutritional qualities, with a low calorie and low fat content, as well as being associated with a Mediterranean diet and consumption. His big handicap is that it’s a little-known kind of meat
